John Daniele asked:

In the postwar era, many technological advances were made in the manufacture of motorcycle helmets. Energy-absorbing foams were developed which could absorb and scatter the force of impact and lessen head trauma from crashes. Improvements were made in all four of the basic elements of the motorcycle helmet: The outer shell, interior lining, flexible foam lining and chin strap.

The most important of these components as regards safety in a crash is the foam lining inside of the helmet. Polystyrene foam (to be precise, expandable polystyrene foam or EPS) is present in a thick layer in contemporary motorcycle helmets. EPS is lightweight and can withstand compression, making it a perfect material to use for the lining of motorcycle helmets. This lining absorbs and diffuses the energy of an impact, which the skull of the rider would otherwise bear the brunt of. EPS comes in different types and is used in various thicknesses in the manufacture of motorcycle helmets. Basically, the more foam that is used, the more impact resistance the helmet possesses.

The interior lining (not to be confused with the foam cushioning is usually removable; all the better to adjust for fit and of course, removal for washing. This liner comprises the top two layers of the interior of a motorcycle helmet. The outer shell is made from extremely durable materials and must go through extensive DOT testing. These tests include resistance to puncture and abrasion (for instance, from skidding along pavement). These days, the shell is likely to be made of fiberglass or plastic due to cost and weight. However, more high end helmets are made from (equally light, yet far more expensive) materials such as Kevlar and carbon fibers.

And last but not least is the chin strap. Usually made of nylon, this vital piece holds everything together and ensures that the helmet will remain on the rider in the event of a crash.

The manufacturing process of motorcycle helmets is undergoing continual improvement by the companies engaged in making them. Lighter materials and better construction mean constant improvement in motorcycle helmets. There are heavier materials out there for helmets; fiberglass for instance. While offering good protection, they can crack if dropped, ruining their utility as protective gear. Injection molded plastic is another common material. However, this is not as long lasting as fiberglass and can be broken down by paint and decals. Great care must be taken with what goes onto a plastic helmet.

Keep in mind what sort of bike you intend to ride while wearing any helmet you are considering purchasing. Discuss it with the staff at your local shop; the type of helmet that can best protect you in a crash can depend to some extent on what model and make you ride.

Jon Cielo asked:

How long will tinnitus last? Depending on it’s cause it may last for anything from hours to years. You might be surprised to learn that tinnitus is actually a symptom of other conditions that you may have, and, that around 93% of sufferers never get relief from tinnitus.

The causes of your tinnitus are things like inner ear / auditory nerve damage, ear infections, ear wax, middle ear tumour (benign), otosclerosis, noise polution, meniere’s desease (inner ear disorder), blocked eustachian tube, etc. These are the things that could determine how long will tinnitus last.

Other potential causes are old age, hardening of the arteries, head trauma, whiplash, some medications, stress, allergies, hypertension, anemia, diet. Again, these may determine how long will tinnitus last.

There are a variety of treatments out there, but given that 93% of sufferers don’t get any relief they just don’t seem to be effective enough. And these folks are left wondering how long will tinnitus last?

Typical treatments are; medications (antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-anxiety tablets, etc.); hearing aid or tinnitus maskers; and complementary programs such as yoga, meditation and acupuncture.

Another option is invasive surgery, but this is rarely used, and, only as an absolutely last resort.

Because of the lack of success of mainstream treatments, and fed up with wondering just how long will tinnitus last? more and more folks are turning to natural, home-based treatments such as that devised by Geoff Barker, a tinnitus researcher and former sufferer.

He has developed a home-based program using 11 solid techniques that he discovered after years of research, testing and development. Users are able to build a treatment program that is matched to their individual needs by using some or all of his 11 proven techniques.

According to Geoff his home-based program has a success rate of 80% with even the other 20% reporting that their tinnitus is less frequent than before.

If you are wondering just how long will tinnitus last? and are desperate to stop the ringing in your ears then you owe it to yourself to go to my website (link below) where you can get the facts on this unique program and be on your way to a cure at last.

Larry Volwiler asked:

I recently had an email from a former client who has a dog that suffers from seizures. Percy is a 4 year old yellow Lab with epilepsy. He has been on traditional ant-seizure medication, and is not responding very well now. He is suffering from seizures once a month, even on the highest doses of these medications.

My former client asked me if there was anything she could do at home, holistically. She wants to avoid conventional medications as much as she can.

So I sent her the information in this article. You may not have a seizuring pet, but you should be aware of the signs and possible solutions.

Seizures in Dogs

The signs of seizures vary, but they generally include some of the following symptoms.

Loss or derangement of consciousness, contractions of all the muscles in the body, changes in mental awareness (from non-responsiveness to hallucinations), involuntary urination, defecation, or salivation, or behavioral changes, including non-recognition of owner, viciousness, pacing, and running in circles.

Seizures consist of three parts:

1) The pre-ictal phase (aura) is a period of altered behavior in which the dog may hide, appear nervous, or seek out his owner. He may be restless, nervous, whining, shaking, or salivating. This may last a few seconds to a few hours.

2) The ictal phase is the actual seizure itself. This lasts from a few seconds to about five minutes. During this period, all of the muscles of the body contract strongly. The dog usually falls on his side and seems paralyzed while shaking. His head will be drawn backward. Urination, defecation, and salivation often occur. If it is not over within five minutes, the dog is said to be in ‘status epilepticus’ or prolonged seizure.

3) During the post-ictal phase, there is confusion, disorientation, salivation, pacing, restlessness, and/or temporary blindness. There is no direct correlation between the severity of the seizure and the duration of the post-ictal phase.

Despite the dramatic signs of a seizure, the dog feels no pain, only bewilderment. Unlike with us humans, dogs do not swallow their tongues. If you put your fingers into his mouth, you’re not going to help! You will run a VERY high risk of being bitten – and bitten very badly. Do NOT place your hands in his mouth. The important thing is to keep your dog from falling and hurting himself. As long as he is on the floor (or outside on the ground), there is little chance that he will harm himself.

If the seizure continues for longer than a few minutes, his body temperature will begin to rise. If hyperthermia (over heating) develops along with a seizure, you will have another set of problems.

Prolonged Seizure (Status Epilepticus)

Status epilepticus is very serious. It is characterized by a seizure that lasts more than five minutes. When this occurs, your dog’s life is in danger. Unless intravenous medication is given quickly, death can occur. If your dog is in this state, you should IMMEDIATELY take him in for emergency veterinary care.

Causes of Seizures

There are many, many causes of seizures. Epilepsy is the most common reason and of least consequence to the dog. The other extreme includes severe diseases such as brain tumors. Fortunately, most seizures are due to epilepsy.

Possible Solutions

When a seizure occurs, we begin by taking a thorough history concentrating on possible exposure to poisonous or hallucinogenic substances or history of head trauma. We also perform a physical examination, a basic battery of blood tests, and an electrocardiogram (EKG). These tests rule out disorders of the liver, kidneys, heart, electrolytes, and blood sugar level. A heartworm test is performed if your dog is not taking heartworm preventative very regularly.

If these tests are normal and there is no exposure to poison or recent trauma, further diagnostics may be performed depending on the severity and frequency of the seizures. Occasional seizures are of less concern than when the seizures are becoming more severe and frequent. In this instance, a spinal fluid tap and fluid analysis may be performed. Depending on availability, specialized imaging of the head with a CAT scan or MRI might be performed. Fortunately, these additional tests are usually not needed.

To The Veterinarian: We generally prescribe 1-2 weeks of anticonvulsant therapy. If there are no more seizures during that time, the anticonvulsants are gradually discontinued. The next treatment is determined by how long it takes for another seizure to occur. That may be days, months, or years. At some point, many dogs have seizures frequently enough to justify continuous anticonvulsant therapy. Since that means that medication must be given every 12 to 24 hours for the rest of the dog’s life, we do not recommend that until seizures occur about every 30 days or unless they last more than five minutes.

It is important to avoid sudden discontinuation of any anticonvulsant medication. Even normal dogs may be induced to seizure if placed on anticonvulsant medication and then abruptly withdrawn from it. Your veterinarian can outline a schedule for discontinuing the medication.

Hypoallergenic Diet: There are reports that show a link between diet and seizures in dogs. Every seizuring pet should at least try a commercial hypoallergenic diet for 12 weeks. You can also make your own elimination diet.

Melatonin: This has been used an anticonvulsant for some dogs. Many dogs only have seizures at night.

Homeopathic: Cicuta virosa. This can be given to control seizures.

Serenity: Many pets with epilepsy will seizure in response to certain stimuli, such as loud noises or bright lights. Get to know what triggers your pet’s seizures, and avoid these situations.

Try the above solutions to see what works for your dog. Note how I mention diet as a possibility: if you are not feeding your pet a quality premium NATURAL food, make the switch NOW. This will help with more than just seizures – this will help in almost all areas of disease. Do what you can!

Katie Kelley asked:

Professional athletes are paid to win, to entertain, to train and, at times, to endure the brunt of much physical abuse because of their profession. However, several recent studies and news outlets have reported an increasingly disturbing number of athletes, both professional and non-professional, developing traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as related to concussions. These injuries may be going untreated and could leave an injured athlete with severe TBI side effects.

A study is being conducted by the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the Boston University’s School of Medicine to determine long-term side effects of continued head trauma including concussions. According to articles from The New York Times, several National Football League (NFL) players have recently decided to leave their brains to the university for study of brain damage and the long-term effects of sports-related concussions. The article noted that the study has confirmed that at least five NFL players, who have recently died, have had damage to their brains that is usually only found in professional boxers.

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) in New Zealand is also attempting to reduce the likelihood of long-term TBI side effects for rugby players, which is an extremely popular pastime and has been deemed Australia’s national sport. The association has even developed a continual research project on rugby players and their injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, known as the Rugby Injury and Performance Project (RIPP). The organization is trying to better treat concussions and side effects, because concussions in professional sports, are often overlooked and inadequately treated.

Recognizing Symptoms of Brain Injury

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) urge family, friends and victims to watch for the following signs and symptoms of TBI after a head injury or trauma has occurred to the brain. The symptoms include:

* blood or clear fluid from nose or ears

* ringing in the ears

* loss of smell or taste

* convulsions or seizures

* sudden onset of fixed stares

* size of pupils become very different (larger or smaller)

* difficulty walking

* blurred vision, double vision

* vomiting or nausea within 1 to 2 hours after injury

* feelings of exhaustion, difficulty walking up

* continued headaches

* continued neck pain

* behavioral or personality changes

TBI Treaments

The Boston University study is also attempting to look at the long-term effects of leaving TBI untreated and the potential treatments for long-term TBI side effects. Studies have found that individuals suffering from hidden brain injury may show additional signs that can be easily overlooked including

* headaches

* loss of balance

* dizziness

* sleep disruptions

Unfortunately, there is currently a strong lack of scientific research regarding long-term effects for TBI untreated, researchers have found that the following can be derived as potential TBI side effects:

* depression, often sever

* suicidal thoughts, actions and tendencies

* cognitive disabilities

* mood disorders

Medical Organizations Assisting with TBI

As researchers continue to find better treatments and technologies for assisting brain-injured victims it will become increasingly important for individuals who participate in sports to be aware of potential signs of brain injury or concussion. Friends and family of athletes should also know the signs and symptoms of TBI and contact health professionals if TBI is suspect. The following are a list of medical organizations nationally recognized as providing assistance to TBI victims, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS):

* Brain Injury Association of America

* Family Caregiver Alliance/National Center on Caregiving

* National Stroke Association

* Acoustic Neuroma Association

* Brain Trauma Foundation

* National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC)

National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)

It is also advisable that a TBI victim contact an experienced traumatic brain injury law firm to better understand the potential for developing a TBI lawsuit to increase the chances of receiving monetary compensation for the costly medical bills associated with traumatic brain injury treatments.
